Use Notion pages in HeyBrain: connect, import and check your first answer

Notion in HeyBrain

Import a page. Check the answer.

Start with one Notion page and one question you can check. Import the page into HeyBrain, ask about a detail it contains, then open the answer’s citation. You should be able to follow the answer back to the imported passage, not just recognize a plausible response.

    Before you import

This guide uses the HeyBrain web app. It covers selected-page import and optional periodic updates where the Notion connection is offered in your workspace. It does not require connecting a separate AI client or giving it access to your whole Notion workspace.

Correction, October 7, 2026: this article previously described an available HeyBrain Notion connector and asserted permission inheritance, field redaction and deletion guarantees without qualifying evidence. Those claims were removed. The original publication date is retained.

Update, October 13, 2026: selected-page import, periodic refresh and answer-to-source navigation now have supporting production checks from October 10–11. The earlier statement that the connector was unavailable is outdated. Those checks do not establish universal account availability or automatic inheritance of every reader’s Notion permissions.

    1. Choose a page with an answer worth checking

Use a short page you are authorized to add to the intended HeyBrain workspace. A maintained project brief is easier to check than an entire wiki. For the first import, prefer ordinary text with a clear title and a few facts; this guide does not establish support for every database, attachment or block type.

The following page is a fictional example. Its questions and expected answers illustrate the workflow; they are not results from a live test.

Harbor review pilot — approved brief

    Status: Approved for internal review.

First review date: November 2, 2026.

    Audience: Internal reviewers only.

    Capacity: 12 reviewers.

    Coordinator: Mara Ellis.

Reviewers should send comments to the coordinator before the first review.

Keep the original page open so you can compare it with the imported document. Importing makes this material available through a separate HeyBrain knowledge collection. Choose the receiving workspace deliberately; do not assume that its readers automatically inherit the original page’s individual Notion permissions.

    2. Connect Notion and select that page

In HeyBrain, open Library, then select Connect source. In the Add knowledge dialog, find Notion under Available sources and select Connect and sync.

The dialog also has an Import from Notion shortcut. For an available, unconnected Notion source, it opens the same authorization route. Use either path; you do not need to do both.

On Notion’s authorization screen, check the intended workspace. At Select pages, choose the page you want to import, then select Allow access. Review the selection before authorizing. This route uses Notion’s authorization screen; it does not ask you to paste an integration token into a conversation.

If Notion is already connected, its connected-source card has Choose pages to reopen page selection. If the connection is not offered in your workspace, this procedure is unavailable there; use the integration availability page for guidance or consider the direct Notion MCP alternative below.

    3. Confirm that a document arrived

After authorization, HeyBrain normally starts the first import and returns you to Library. Let the import finish, then look for the page’s title. A Connected label confirms the connection state; it does not, by itself, show that your page’s contents arrived.

Open the Library entry and select View document. For the fictional brief, check that the review date, audience, capacity and coordinator are present. If the passage you need is missing, resolve that before asking HeyBrain to summarize it.

Two messages have specific next steps:

No pages were shared: return to the connected Notion card, select Choose pages, and select the intended page.

The first import did not start automatically: select Sync now on that card. You do not need a second manual sync after every successful automatic import.

If a sync reports an error, inspect its report rather than treating an empty Library as an answer about the source.

    4. Ask without supplying the answer

Open Ask the brain and choose New chat. Name the imported page and ask for the facts you want to retrieve:

According to “Harbor review pilot — approved brief,” when is the first review, who can participate, how many reviewers are planned, and who coordinates it? Cite the source.

The question supplies the page title and the information needed, but none of the answer values. Based on the visible fictional excerpt, an answer should communicate:

The first review is November 2, 2026. It is for internal reviewers only, with capacity for 12 reviewers. Mara Ellis coordinates it.

The wording can vary. The values should agree with the imported passage, and the answer should provide a source you can inspect. A confident answer without supporting content is not a successful check.

    5. Follow the citation into Library

Expand the source count beneath the answer, open the cited document link, then select View document. Compare the relevant passage with each part of the answer.

In this workflow, the citation opens the HeyBrain Library document. It is not proof that the assistant fetched the original Notion page at the moment you asked. Compare the Library passage with Notion if freshness matters.

For the example, “12 reviewers” is supported. “12 customers” would be wrong, even though the number matches: the brief specifies internal reviewers. Checking both the detail and its meaning is more useful than merely confirming that a citation exists.

    6. Decide how the imported page should stay current

For later manual refreshes, use Sync now on the connected Notion card. For periodic checks, enable Keep automatically updated. The interface describes checks about every hour after the previous sync finishes. That is periodic refresh, not instant synchronization or a guaranteed one-hour deadline.

To understand the difference, imagine the fictional brief’s owner changes only its capacity line from 12 reviewers to 16 reviewers. The other facts remain unchanged. After a completed refresh, first check that Library contains the revised line. Then ask the same question in a new chat.

The expected content is now: November 2, internal reviewers only, 16 reviewers, coordinated by Mara Ellis. If Library still says 12, the imported copy has not yet reflected that change. If Library says 16 but the answer says 12, inspect the cited document and the conversation context rather than assuming the source refresh failed.

Turning automatic updates off pauses future checks; an import already running can finish. Neither refreshing an imported page nor answering from it establishes the ability to edit the original Notion page through HeyBrain.

When direct Notion MCP is the better route

If your task belongs inside an external AI client and requires Notion read or write tools, evaluate Notion’s own hosted MCP service. It is a different connection from importing pages into HeyBrain. Notion publishes client-specific setup instructions, including Claude Code and Cursor.

Notion says its MCP tools operate with the connected user’s access. Review that account and the proposed actions before using write tools. A HeyBrain import test does not establish how a separate client behaves. For the wider product choice, see HeyBrain and Notion AI compared.

For your first HeyBrain import, stop after one useful answer that matches both its citation and the source page. Once that works, add the next reference you actually need.

Method: written by HeyBrain Editorial Team with AI assistance. Instructions were checked against the current HeyBrain implementation and retained production observations from October 10–11, 2026, including selected-page import, periodic refresh and answer/source navigation. This revision did not perform a new account connection. Notion’s primary documentation supports the separate MCP alternative. The Harbor brief and expected answers are fictional illustrations, not measured outputs.
