HeyBrain vs Cognee

Choose by whether your team wants to operate the graph pipeline or evaluate a separate knowledge workflow.

Two documents disagree about who owns a service. A graph can connect both names to the service, but someone still has to decide which document is current. Cognee prepares connected memory from documents for agents and tools. Consider HeyBrain for a separate reference workflow, then test the same ownership question in each candidate. Compare how much configuration and ongoing maintenance the task needs. Do not assume that only one product can control access. Method: primary vendor sources reviewed on 6 October 2026; no hands-on head-to-head benchmark. Diagrams and pilot stories are fictional evaluation examples, not screenshots, customers or measured results.

Why teams compare them

  • Make the disputed fact visible

For a fictional service, prepare an earlier owner list and a dated approved handover. Ask for the current owner and why. Record whether the answer distinguishes the two editions rather than combining them into an unsupported conclusion.

  • Treat configuration as part of the product

A permission diagram is not a runtime test. For Cognee, review the configured access-control mode and supported storage handlers. For HeyBrain, verify the actual identities and supported input path you intend to use.

  • When Cognee fits better

Cognee is a candidate when developers want to configure a memory pipeline and graph-backed recall around their own application. Decide who will maintain it and how pipeline changes will be evaluated.

The questions people actually ask about Cognee

Does Cognee lack access control?

No. Its documentation describes dataset permissions and principals including users, tenants and roles.

The right follow-up is whether the configured deployment enforces the boundaries you need. Test a permitted dataset and an excluded dataset with fictional material; do not substitute a vendor description for the result.

Is a graph enough to make an answer trustworthy?

Connections can help a workflow, but a plausible connection is not itself proof that a claim is current or supported.

Use the fictional handover documents to check the exact statement and edition behind the answer. Keep an unresolved result visible instead of requiring the assistant to choose a name without evidence.

What should we test before adding another dataset?

Keep the first dataset non-sensitive and assign an owner. Specify which identity can read, change, remove or share it.

Then test one requested boundary at a time in the supported configuration. Cognee documents distinct dataset permissions; neither that list nor HeyBrain’s positioning proves your deployed configuration passes.

What is the hidden maintenance cost?

The cost is often investigating a stale answer, a changed source or a configuration mismatch. Count the work needed to resolve those cases.

Run one source correction and one access-removal exercise in an owned pilot. Keep the setup only if someone can reliably explain and maintain it after the initial demo.

Sources and review method

Vendor documentation checked on 2026-10-06. These sources describe published policies and features; they are not independent tests of your configuration. The fictional pilot examples above are not measured results.

  • Cognee introduction and lifecycle

Cognee combines document processing with graph-based memory and supports Python, a CLI, a REST API and MCP-compatible clients. Its v1.0 documentation describes remember, recall, improve and forget operations.

  • Cognee permission architecture

Cognee documents dataset-scoped read, write, delete and share permissions for users, tenants and roles. Its access-control mode uses authentication and dataset-specific storage.

  • Cognee permissions setup

Cognee access-control behavior depends on configuration and supported graph/vector dataset handlers. Its setup documentation describes compatibility checks and errors for incompatible providers or handlers.

Who each one is for

HeyBrain logo

Choose HeyBrain if

  • Your immediate task is a reference workflow rather than pipeline development
  • Selected approved documents have an owner
  • You will test the actual client and identity configuration
Cognee logo

Choose Cognee if

  • You want to configure graph-backed memory around your application
  • Your team can operate and evaluate the pipeline
  • Dataset-scoped permissions fit a verified deployment

Move a test dataset, not your production graph.

Keep the existing source as the owner. Select an approved or fictional dataset and verify the receiving workflow before transferring it.

Do not assume graph relationships, dataset permissions or historical records retain their meaning in another service. Document the mapping and a way to stop the pilot without losing the original.

Questions, answered

Does Cognee support permissions?
Yes. Its documentation includes dataset-scoped permissions and multi-user access control. Verify the configured provider/handler combination and actual runtime boundary.
Is HeyBrain automatically connected to a Cognee graph?
No automatic graph connection or permission migration is established by this page. Confirm the supported transfer path before using it.
What makes a useful first comparison?
Use a dated ownership change and an excluded fictional dataset. Check the supported current answer, the read boundary and the effort to maintain both.
